Flooring freight costs depend on three factors: weight, distance, and method.
Weight
- Solid hardwood — 2.5-3.5 lbs/sq ft, 1,500-2,000 lbs per pallet

The nearby closeout is a clear win. The distant closeout barely beats regular wholesale.
For tile, the math is more dramatic:
Same exercise with tile at $1.80/sq ft — a heavier product:
Tile closeout 100 miles: $1.80 product + $0.40 freight = $2.20/sq ft delivered. Significant savings.
Tile closeout 800 miles: $1.80 product + $1.40 freight = $3.20/sq ft delivered. Saves almost nothing.
Regular wholesale (local): $3.00 product + $0.25 freight = $3.25/sq ft delivered. The baseline.
The distant tile closeout saves almost nothing. The local closeout saves significantly.
How to Source Regionally
Filter by Location

Flooring distribution concentrates in certain cities:

The product is rare. Exotic hardwood or specialty products may not be available locally.
You have time. Rail freight or economy LTL can reduce costs if you're not in a hurry.
