Overstock LVP Flooring: Where to Find the Best Deals
Overstock LVP Flooring: Where to Find the Best Deals
LVP (Luxury Vinyl Plank) is the fastest-moving flooring category. It's also one of the most oversupplied.
Distributors overbought during the post-2020 remodel boom. Now they're sitting on inventory. For contractors, this means opportunity: quality LVP at 25-40% below wholesale is available if you know where to look.
This guide covers where to source overstock LVP, what to evaluate, and what the current market looks like.
Why LVP Overstock Exists
The LVP market is oversupplied for specific reasons:
Boom-era overbought. 2020-2022 saw massive demand for flooring. Distributors ordered aggressively. When demand normalized, they had inventory.
Fast product cycles. LVP manufacturers release new lines constantly. New colors, new textures, new formats. Last year's bestseller is this year's clearance.
Import timing. Most LVP is imported. Container shipments ordered 6 months ago arrive into a different market than when ordered.
Color trend shifts. LVP is more color-sensitive than hardwood. Gray tones dominated for years. Warm browns are returning. That gray LVP needs to move.
This creates a buyer's market for anyone willing to source outside standard distribution channels.
Where to Find Overstock LVP
B2B Marketplaces
Dedicated platforms where flooring professionals trade surplus inventory.
What to look for:
- Verified sellers (real distributors and manufacturers)
- Full specifications (thickness, wear layer, format)
- Transparent pricing per sq ft
- Photos of actual product
PlankMarket lists LVP from verified distributors with full specs and pricing on every listing.
Distributor Clearance
Your existing distributor relationships. Most distributors have overstock they're not actively promoting.
How to access:
- Ask your rep directly: "What LVP are you trying to move?"
- Request clearance list updates
- Visit the warehouse if local
The inventory isn't always publicized. You have to ask.
Direct-to-Contractor Sales
Some manufacturers are selling direct to move overstock, bypassing distribution.
Where to find:
- Manufacturer websites (outlet sections)
- Trade show promotions
- Manufacturer rep relationships
Minimums may be higher, but pricing can be aggressive.
Retail Liquidation Channels
When retailers over-order or close locations, LVP ends up in liquidation.
Sources:
- Liquidation auction sites
- Local flooring liquidator warehouses
- Big box store markdown inventory
Quality and documentation vary more in retail liquidation. Verify what you're buying.
What to Evaluate in Overstock LVP
Total Thickness
LVP ranges from 2mm to 8mm+ total thickness.
- 2-4mm — Light residential, budget (Entry level)
- 4-6mm — Standard residential (Standard level)
- 6-8mm+ — Commercial, heavy residential (Premium level)
Thicker is generally better: more stability, better acoustics, more realistic feel underfoot.
For closeout purchasing, aim for 5mm+ unless the discount is substantial on thinner material.
Wear Layer
The wear layer determines durability. Measured in mils (thousandths of an inch).
- 6-12 mil — Light residential durability, best for bedrooms and low-traffic areas
- 12-20 mil — Standard residential durability, suitable for general use
- 20-28 mil — Heavy residential/light commercial durability, ideal for high-traffic areas
- 28+ mil — Commercial durability, designed for commercial applications
Most contractor work needs 12 mil minimum. 20 mil for kitchens, entryways, and high-traffic areas.
SPC vs. WPC Core
Two primary LVP core types:
SPC (Stone Polymer Composite):
- Denser, more rigid
- Better for uneven subfloors
- More temperature stable
- Currently more in demand
WPC (Wood Polymer Composite):
- Softer underfoot
- Better acoustics
- Warmer feel
- Slightly less rigid
SPC is currently preferred, so SPC overstock is more valuable. WPC overstock may need deeper discounts to move.
Attached Pad vs. Padless
Many LVP products include attached underlayment.
- Attached pad: Faster install, consistent performance, premium
- No pad: Requires separate underlayment, lower initial cost
Attached pad products are worth more at closeout because they save installation time and material cost.
Format and Dimensions
LVP comes in various formats:
Plank: Standard for most installations. Length and width vary. Tile: Square format, often used for commercial or specific aesthetics. Herringbone/Chevron: Patterned install, growing in popularity.
Wide plank (7"+) and longer lengths are on-trend. Narrow planks (4"-5") may be harder to place and need bigger discounts.
Pricing Benchmarks
What to expect for overstock LVP (discounts vs. wholesale):
- Premium SPC (6mm+, 20mil+, attached pad): 20-30% off when overstock, 30-40% off when discontinued
- Standard SPC (5mm, 12-20mil): 25-35% off when overstock, 35-45% off when discontinued
- WPC, any tier: 30-45% off at closeout
- Entry level (under 5mm): 40-60% off at closeout
Premium SPC with attached pad is the sweet spot: strong demand, good closeout availability, and attractive pricing at 25-30% off.
Red Flags
Unknown manufacturer. LVP quality varies dramatically. Unknown origin products are high risk.
Inconsistent color matching. Different production runs can have noticeable color variation. If buying from multiple lots, verify they match.
Missing wear layer spec. If they can't tell you the wear layer, assume it's thin.
"Commercial grade" without specs. Commercial grade means 20+ mil wear layer. If they can't provide the number, it probably isn't.
Damaged packaging. LVP is reasonably durable, but water-damaged boxes suggest storage problems. Inspect before buying.
Obsolete locking system. Older LVP used different click-lock systems. Make sure parts are compatible if you ever need to replace planks.
Using LVP Overstock in Your Business
Project Bidding
Source overstock before quoting. If you find matching LVP at 30% off wholesale, you can:
- Bid more competitively
- Improve margin on the job
- Offer a higher-spec product at the same price
Warehouse Stock
Many contractors keep common LVP colors in stock, bought at closeout prices. When a project calls for "medium gray LVP," they already have it.
This works best for:
- High-volume contractors
- Common color palettes
- Products you use repeatedly
Retail Arbitrage
Some contractors buy closeout LVP and resell to other contractors or small retailers. The margins are thin, but it can be a sideline.
Bottom Line
Overstock LVP is abundant right now. Distributors are holding inventory they need to move.
For contractors, this means quality LVP at significant discounts is available. The key is knowing what you're buying: thickness, wear layer, core type, and manufacturer.
Premium SPC with 20+ mil wear layer and attached pad at 30% off is a genuine deal. "LVP closeout" with no specs at any price is a gamble.
